John Henry/Hardwick/Harding SullivanJohn Sullivan went by many names. He listed himself as John Henry and John Harding. His family knew him by John Hardwick. John also seemed to change his birthdate a lot. He reported it as July 2nd a couple of times, but the year always changed. Because of this, it makes it hard to trace down who he was and where he came from.
I have created this webpage to share information in finding out more about my great grandfather.
If you have anything to share, email john.sullivan@rjakbennett.com

1880 - Assuming an earliest birthday of July 2, 1879 John Sullivan would appear on this census. However no direct evidence has been found. If we were to know his birth place, then this might be possible.
1890 - Would also be on this census, but this was lost due to a fire.
1900 - At this time, John would have been away in the Spanish American War and would not have appeared on any census.
1910 - 1910 Census shows him stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Burlington, VT. The 10th Cavalry was stationed here from 1909 to 1913.
Birthplace Alabama
Birth (Year) 1884
1917 - Marries Emily DeForge. No marriage record found yet. Most likely in Burlington, VT.
1917 - WWI Draft Registration Card shows him living in Burlington, VT, and is married. He works at the Vermont Mattress Co.
Birthplace Chattanooga, TN
Birthdate July 2, 1884
1917/1918 - Has a son named Arthur.
1920 - Has a daughter named Rose.
1920 - 1920 Census shows his wife, Emily, living with children Arthur and Rose at her parents house. I would assume that this is because John is gone away to war, possibly WWI.
Birthplace Tennessee per birthplace of father of Arthur.
1930 - 1930 Census shows him living with his wife, Emily, and their son, Arthur. Rose is believed to have passed away.
Birthplace Ohio
Birth (Year) 1882
1942 - WW2 Draft Registration Card shows him married to Emily Sullivan. He is employed at the Champlain Mattress Co, and living in Burlington, VT.
Birthplace Cleveland, OH
Birthdate July 2, 1879
1948/1949 - He is reunited with his sister Emily after 50 years apart. This would have put the last time he saw her right before joining the army for the Spanish American War. An article about their reuniting appeared in the Burlington Free Press, however no indexes are kept for this time period which makes searching difficult.
1956 - Daughter Gladys, and possible daughter Shirley remembers this year as the year he passed away. They are certain he had a SSN, however no matches were found on the Social Security Death Index.

One side note... Rose may or may not have passed away I looked at it again and she would have been 19. She may have moved out and married. Has Gladys ever talked about Rose or Arthur ? Are they still living ?
